Revolutionizing Seed Testing and Analysis with Spectral Imaging
Janek Bartel, an innovative seed analyst from SGS, is pushing the boundaries of seed testing by embracing advanced technologies, especially in image analysis. Driven by curiosity and a passion for innovation, Bartel explores emerging technologies, like multispectral imaging and MRI scans, that have the potential to transform seed testing by identifying issues non-invasively.
He became captivated by image analysis techniques, reading about them and immediately seeing their potential in seed testing. When he had the chance to try out the equipment, he collaborated closely with Videometer and engineers Kimon Togrou and Christian Thyssen, to develop new classifiers, add features, and enhance the equipment’s capabilities specifically for seed testing.
This hands-on approach reflects Bartel’s dedication to advancing the field, making him a key player in international seed testing initiatives. His influence spans various projects, including lecturing at ISTA’s germination workshop in Romania, leading ISTA’s seedling imaging project, and helping to bring the ISTA Meeting to Canada in 2026, which will afford Canadian seed analysts’ greater access to global innovations.
