Food and Feed & Multispectral Imaging

LGC is a British laboratory that serves as a measurement and testing place. In addition, it has an advisory role for the government.

LGC report is proving that MSI can be used to analyze food and feed samples in a rapid and non-destructive way. The analysis consists of various tests such as:

  • Oregano herbs with foreign bodies
  • Basmati rice adulteration
  • Beef meat blended with pork meat
  • Other Food and Feed adulterations

One of the examples of this study is Oregano herbs mixed with Olive leaves. Those two spices are to a large extent similar in color and texture. Hence, the human eye is not able to differentiate between the two in an efficient way. VideometerLab is the flagship instrument of the company, that also has been used in this analysis.

Processed Image allows the user of the VideometerLab to see exactly the analyzed sample with distinguishable colors. Moreover, Multispectral Imaging can aid the food and feed industry with testing samples for adulteration, admixture, and more.

Another example from the LGC report is the analysis of Basmati rice that was contaminated with fine gravel impurities and adulterated with ‘plastic rice’.

MSI represents an emerging analytical technology within the food sector with the potential to augment or even replace multiple current tests with a single flexible platform.
