Explore Advanced Root Imaging With The Videometer Minirhizotron

We are pleased to announce the publication of our new datasheet for the Videometer MiniRhizotron, a compact spectral imaging system designed for automated, non-destructive root analysis directly in field and semi-field conditions.

The Videometer MiniRhizotron

Roots play a crucial role in plant performance, yet they remain one of the most challenging parts of plants to study. With the Videometer MiniRhizotron, researchers can obtain reliable, repeatable, and quantitative root data with minimal manual intervention, even in heterogeneous or challenging soil types.

Spectral imaging that goes beyond RGB

Unlike traditional RGB-based approaches, the Videometer MiniRhizotron combines advanced spectral imaging with machine-learning and AI. Using five high-power LED wavelengths (405, 450, 550, 660, and 940 nm), the system can differentiate actively living roots from dead roots remaining from previous growing seasons. The selection of wavelengths can be customized within defined limits, allowing the system to be adapted to specific research objectives or product needs while maintaining reliable performance and standardization. This enables researchers to focus specifically on current root activity and development, improving the quality of below-ground data.

Thanks to its spectral approach, the MiniRhizotron delivers superior root separation and color determination, enabling accurate monitoring of root growth dynamics over time.

Fast, standardized, and field-ready

Designed for real-world research conditions, the Videometer MiniRhizotron performs complete spectral imaging and quantitative analysis in just 5–10 seconds. The system is standardized and includes an easy-to-use calibration procedure, ensuring consistent and reproducible results across experiments.

With optional battery operation and a compact, lightweight design, the MiniRhizotron is well suited for mobile, in-field analysis as well as controlled semi-field setups. Optional add-ons, such as a water sensor for detecting water in soil, further extend its application range.

Powerful software for research and routine use

The system is delivered with an annual subscription to VideometerLab Software, providing access to powerful exploratory tools for R&D, machine learning-based image analysis, and recipe building for routine applications. This makes the MiniRhizotron a flexible solution for plant science, breeding, and agronomic research.
